Asking for a Google review on WhatsApp means sending the customer, inside a conversation they opened or accepted, a short message containing your listing's review link. The channel is tempting: it lands where the customer already talks to friends and family. It is also the most tightly framed of the review request channels, because Meta charges for messages sent outside a conversation and because consent is collected as it would be for a commercial message. Here is what WhatsApp actually allows, what it costs, and when SMS remains the better choice.

WhatsApp review request

A solicitation message sent from a business WhatsApp account to a customer who consented to be contacted, containing the shop's Google review link, with no incentive and no condition attached to the rating left.

Three things matter. WhatsApp is not an address book you can improvise with: a business account, a dated consent record and a direct review link all come before the first send. Timing counts more than wording. And the channel does not replace SMS: it complements it for part of your customer base.

Why use WhatsApp for Google review requests

WhatsApp makes sense when the customer relationship already runs through messaging: bookings, quotes, appointment confirmations. In that case the review request extends an existing thread instead of opening a cold solicitation, which makes it less intrusive than a standalone text.

A widely installed channel, but not a universal one

Instant messaging is now a mass habit in France. The digital barometer published by Arcep reports that 86 % of people aged 12 and over use an instant messaging service and that 64 % of the population uses it daily (Arcep, digital equipment and usage, 2026 edition).

The same survey, run by CRÉDOC in June 2025 among 4,145 people aged 12 and over, also shows heavy fragmentation: 82 % of users send messages from at least two different applications (Arcep, 2026 edition). In other words, having a customer's number is no guarantee they will read a message on the app you picked.

The limits to know before you start

Adoption is uneven by age and by trade. An older neighbourhood clientele is more likely to read a text, which depends on no app at all. Conversely, a younger or international clientele, a sports club, a hotel hosting foreign travellers will find WhatsApp a natural channel. Test before generalising: how your own customer file splits tells you more than a national average.

What to get right before sending

Three things must be in place: a legal basis for contacting the customer, a business account that follows Meta's rules, and a review link that opens the rating window directly. Without any one of them, the request is either unlawful, or billed, or ineffective.

Customer consent

France's data protection authority, the CNIL, requires prior consent from individuals for electronic marketing, given through a positive action such as an unticked box, with an exception for an existing customer contacted about similar products or services. Every message must allow a simple refusal (CNIL, commercial prospecting by electronic means).

In practice, do what you already do for your SMS campaigns: clear wording at booking or checkout, the date and source of consent kept on record, and an opt-out line in the message. A customer who replies "stop" must never be contacted again on that channel.

Business account and real cost

WhatsApp Business is not a personal account with a logo on it. From the free WhatsApp Business app, messages sent by hand are not billed. For automated sends through the WhatsApp Business Platform API, Meta now charges per template message delivered by a business, while non-template messages stay free inside an open conversation (Meta, WhatsApp Business Platform pricing).

On the API side, the key notion is the customer service window: it lasts 24 hours from the customer's last message, and during that time it lets you send any kind of message without going through an approved template (Meta, WhatsApp Business Platform pricing). That is the real operational constraint for automated sends: if the customer wrote this morning to confirm their booking, the review request sent that evening costs nothing. Two days later it goes through a billed template.

Getting the direct Google review link

In Google Business Profile, open the reviews section and copy the sharing link offered to get more reviews. It opens the rating window in one tap on mobile. Never insert an intermediate page asking customers to rate their experience first: that kind of filtering is prohibited. The full method is covered in our guide to getting more Google reviews.

When to send the message

Send while the conversation is still open, so within the 24 hours following the customer's last message, and while the experience is fresh. This double criterion, commercial and technical, gives a simple rule: the request goes out the same day or the next one, never the following week.

  1. 1
    The customer writes or confirms

A booking, a question, an appointment confirmation: that message is what opens the service window and makes what follows free.

  2. 2
    The service ends

A reported problem is handled separately, directly with the customer. The review request goes out the same way to every consenting customer.

  3. 3
The message goes out that day

A short message, the link, an opt-out line. No automated reminder behind it.

On frequency, stick to one send per visit and zero reminders on this channel. WhatsApp feels like a private space: a second solicitation costs more in goodwill than it earns in reviews. The reasoning trade by trade is in our article on the best time to ask for a review.

Message templates by trade

A good message fits in three lines: who is writing, why the review matters, the link. No rating requested, no incentive, no conditional phrasing such as "if you enjoyed it". Adapt the tone to the trade, not the structure.

Restaurants and hotels. "Hello [First name], thank you for having lunch with us at [Name] yesterday. If you have two minutes, your Google review means a lot to a place like ours: [link]. Just reply stop if you would rather not receive messages."

Beauty and healthcare. "Hello [First name], I hope you are happy with the cut. A word on Google helps people find the salon: [link]. Thank you, and have a good week." For a healthcare practice, caution applies: review solicitation is poorly received there and often restricted by professional codes of conduct.

Trades and garages. "Hello [First name], your car went back on the road yesterday after the service. A Google review really helps us: [link]. Safe driving."

Measuring and comparing channels

Do not steer by gut feeling. For each campaign, record the number of messages sent, the number of reviews received within seven days, and the cost of the channel. After a month the ranking is rarely the one you expected, and it differs from one business to the next.

WhatsAppNone inside the service window, billed otherwiseCustomers with the app installed24 h window, business account required
SMSBilled on every sendEvery phoneSending hours and opt-out wording
QR codePrinting onlyCustomers on the premisesDepends on the customer making a move

The on-site QR code remains the cheapest and simplest channel, SMS the most universal, and WhatsApp the most natural when the conversation already exists. Keeping a single opt-in customer base, fed by your QR codes and imports, avoids asking the same person twice: that is the role of our customer base.

What Google's rules say

Google allows you to ask for reviews, not to steer them. The fake engagement policy prohibits offering a benefit, payment, discount, free product or service in exchange for a review, discouraging negative reviews or selectively soliciting positive ones, and pressuring people into writing a review on the spot (Google, fake engagement policy).

In concrete terms, that rules out three common practices: the message sent only to customers flagged as happy, the intermediate form that routes low ratings to a private channel, and the discount offered for a review. The same message goes to every consenting customer, whatever their visit was like, and the review that follows stays theirs.

Filtering is visible

A business whose reviews are exclusively positive and posted in waves draws the attention of Google's detection systems. The risk is not a warning: it is the removal of the reviews concerned, and sometimes of the listing.

Frequently asked questions

Can I ask for a Google review on WhatsApp without the customer's consent?

No. In France, the CNIL requires prior consent from individuals for electronic marketing, given through a positive action such as an unticked box. The only exception covers existing customers contacted about similar products or services. Collect the agreement when you take the number, keep the date and the wording, and leave a simple way to opt out in every message. Other countries have comparable rules.

Is WhatsApp Business free for this kind of message?

Yes from the free WhatsApp Business app, for messages sent by hand. For automated sends through the WhatsApp Business Platform API, non-template messages are free while the customer service window is open, which is 24 hours after the customer's last message. After that you need an approved template, and Meta charges for template messages one by one. A review request sent the same day, inside a conversation the customer already started, therefore costs nothing.

When is the best time to send the message?

On the day of the service or the day after, while the memory is fresh and the conversation is still open. If a problem was reported, handle it separately, by phone: that is customer service, distinct from the review request, which goes out the same way to every consenting customer. One request per visit, with no follow-up reminder on this channel.

Should I prefer WhatsApp over SMS for review requests?

It depends on your customer base. WhatsApp works well when the relationship already runs through messaging and when customers are young or international. SMS stays more universal: it needs no app installed, which matters for an older neighbourhood clientele. The safest approach is to test both for a month and compare the reviews each one brings in.

Can the WhatsApp message offer a discount in exchange for a review?

No. Google's fake engagement policy prohibits offering any benefit, payment, discount, free product or service, in exchange for posting a review. It also prohibits selectively soliciting satisfied customers. The same message has to go to every consenting customer, with no condition attached to the rating they will leave.
